Mind & Body : Cranio Sacral Therapy

"Understanding your body's natural rhythms and needs activates unbelievably powerful disease-fighting processes within you." Deepak Chopra, M.D.

(Ed Note: Alternative medicine is any form of practice that is outside the realm of conventional modern medicine. It covers a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches, and therapies. Most of these treatments and health care practices are not taught widely in medical schools. These overviews are intended to be a guide not an endorsement. As with all matters of personal health, research and experimentation is needed in order to determine which is best for you. TLR)

Cranio Sacral Therapy (CST) is a very gentle non-force technique that uses the bones of the head, spine, and pelvis to relieve tension directly from the nervous system. Since the nervous system controls everything form our muscles, digestion, circulation, even our mood, applying this technique allows the body to achieve a relaxed state that initiates the powerful self-healing process.

The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth, which make up the cranium, down to the sacrum or tailbone area.

Since the vital system influences the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord an imbalance or restriction could potentially cause any number of sensory, motor and neurological disabilities.

CST is a gentle method of detection and correction that encourages natural healing mechanisms to dissipate these negative effects of stress on the central nervous system. CST releases restrictions in body tissues (physical level of unresolved past trauma).

CST is a hands-on healing technique that uses a light touch. By using this touch the therapist can access a core rhythm in the body that is created by the fluid system surrounding the brain and the spinal cord.

The practitioner monitors the rhythm of the Cranio Sacral system to detect potential restrictions and imbalances. Where there are restrictions it will show up as a lack of motion or rhythm. The therapist then uses delicate manual techniques to release those problem areas and relieve undue pressure on the brain and spinal cord.
